Uganda’s first appearance at the Street Child World Cup got off to perfect start following their 6-wicket win over Rwanda on Monday in Chennai, India.
The event got underway on Sunday with an exhibition of cultural heritage at the Concert Hall at Lady Andal School, but the games proper bowled off on Monday with four games in Group B.
In a five Over of four balls tournament, Uganda restricted Rwanda to 22 runs, and the side that is under Emmanuel Isaneez’s tutelage didn’t have to do much in their chase.
Rwanda gave away 10 extras in their bid to defend the score. Jonathan Nyiiro and Malisa Ariokot each scored a maximum, but with Rwanda’s extravagant bowling, that’s all Isaneez’s team needed to chase the target inside the second Over
The SCCWC is a mixed tournament of three boys and three girls! Isaneez gave the nod to Nyiiro, Naome Amongin, Agnes Nakakande, Gerald Olipa, Ali Balidawa and Ariokot ahead of Aziz Tandia and Lorna Anyait.
Uganda is placed in Group B alongside Mexico, Nepal, England, Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
Both Nepal and Zimbabwe won their respective games. Nepal beat Mexico by 5 wickets while England lost to Zimbabwe by the same number of wickets.
The day’s last game in the group saw Rwanda lose again. They lost by 5 wickets to Nepal who are now the Group leaders.
The teams will take a one day rest and will return to action on Wednesday. Uganda will face Mexico that day.
