Steve McManaman: Liverpool Legend Coming To Uganda

Former Liverpool star Steve McManaman will be visiting Uganda next month!

McManaman is on an official visit and will grace the Road To Anfield tournament due October 7 2023.

The tourney that will be held at Omondi stadium in Lugogo, is organised by Standard Chartered bank, the official shirt sponsor of English giants Liverpool FC.

McManaman played for Liverpool from 1990 to 1999, a nine-year period in which he won the FA Cup and League Cup.

He was also the Premier League’s top assist provider for the 1995/96 season and was named in the PFA Team of the Year the following season.

He joined Spanish side Real Madrid where he won La Liga and Champions League twice.

McManaman is considered to be the most technically gifted English player, and represented the Country at the UEFA Euro 1996 and the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Road to Anfield

The Road to Anfield tournament, call it the Standard Chartered Cup, is a tournament where teams compete in a five-a-side football tournament.

The eventual winner (team) of the tournament earns a once in a lifetime opportunity to attend a Premier League game at Anfield.

It is hinged on the Bank’s Liverpool FC sponsorship and is a great opportunity for Standard Chartered to reinforce its partnership with Liverpool FC locally and engage its clients and local LFC fans in the beautiful game of football.

This will be the sixth edition of the tournament which was last played in 2019 before future editions were halted by Covid-19.

“I look forward to enjoying some friendly, but exciting, competition among our 40 corporate peers for the chance win the Grand prize of an all-expenses paid trip to watch a match live at Anfield, the home of Liverpool Football Club.

“I would like to appeal to all invited corporates to take advantage of this opportunity as soon as possible as it’s on a first come, first serve basis. I want to thank all the past participating organisations, our media partners for supporting us on this journey.”

On the coming of McManaman, he commented: “We are delighted to host a Liverpool legend like Steve McManaman join us this year. Steve was and continues to be a role model for many – respected by his teammates, opponents, managers and fans alike.”

The tournament targets 40 teams of 7 players (participants) each who will play 10-minute 5-aside matches (with 2 substitutes).

The teams will comprise of the Bank’s Corporate, Commercial or Business Banking entities, LFC fans and media partners. Participation is strictly by invitation.

Registration closes this Friday, September 29th while the draws will be held next week on Wednesday for a tournament that will be played on October 7 at Lugogo.
