Italy based Ugandan forward Viola Nambi is the latest player to join the Uganda National Senior (Women’s) Team – the Crested Cranes.
Nambi has had a fairy start for her new side Pomilgiano who put up quite a show in a five goal thriller against Juventus on Saturday, despite eventually losing 3-2.
The Crested Cranes forward was unveiled in Italy on Friday, made her Seria A debut on Saturday and scored against Juventus.
By Monday, the forward was already settled in at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru, training with her Ugandan teammates ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Algeria in the first round of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.
Before Nambi, three more foreign based players, including goalkeeper Vanessa Edith Karungi from Denmark, midfielder Joan Nabirye from Belarus and forward Fauzia Najjemba had arrived a day before she did.
The other foreign based players available are; Phiona Nabbumba from Denmark, Joan Ainembabazi and Riticia Nabbosa (both from Tanzania’s Simba Queens FC).
They join other players like Kampala Queens’ Fazila Ikwaput, plus other locally-based players who had already started training with the team.
Uganda will host Algeria on Wednesday this week at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru before the return leg slated for 26th September in Oran.
The winner on aggregate between Uganda and Algeria will face either Burundi or Ethiopia in the final qualification round.
At the moment, the team is still continuing with the training sessions under coach Ayub Khalifan and Olive Mbekeka as the search for the Head Coach and Assistant of the Crested Cranes continues
