City Oilers expectedly put one leg into the semifinals after beating Kampala Rockets on Friday in the best of three NBL Quarterfinals Playoffs.

The Oilers won 88-69 to take Game One and will complete the sweep if they win game two this Sunday.

The battle of a top seed in Oilers against number eighth seeding Rockets was always going to be a one-sided affair.

But the Rockets who are playing in the NBL this season for the first time, fought admiringly and stayed in the contest for the best part of the game.

And despite being a David in a battle against Goliath, they were brave and took the game to Oilers as Guard Gideon Kasasa led with slickness.

They were 21-18 up after the first quarter before the Oilers slowly settled into the game and began to peel away.

But the Rockets failed to guard their perimeter, letting Ivan Muhwezi shoot 5-for-8 from three to garner 17 points.

Four other Oilers players – Titus Lual (16), Tony Drilleba (12), Allawi Ssenkubuge (11) and Fayed Baale (10) – scored in double digits.

Kasasa had 17 points, John Dombo drilled in 14 against his former side while Kur Garang and Francis Kasinde added 11 each for the Rockets.

Oilers banked on quality in their depth, collecting 44 points off the bench against Rockets’ 7.

In the Women’s game, JT Lady Jaguars took Game One thanks to a 79-53 win over Magic Stormers.

Zainah Lokwameri scoring a game high 22 points in a player of the match performance where she added seven rebounds and four assists.
