The defending champions of the Pepsi University football league Uganda Martyrs earned a strong start with a 3-1 win over Bugema University in the opening game that was held at Nkozi on Tuesday.

A brace from Sentongo Akbar and one from Agumire Ivan ensured that Uganda Martyrs got off to a winning start.

Denis Kimuli scored the only goal from the spot for Bugema who suffered defeat.

It was a brilliant start for Uganda Martyrs who won the title last year when they beat St. Lawrence at Lugogo.

And on Tuesday, they showed that hunger for more glory this season more so in front of their home fans.

Agumire broke the deadlock in the 36th minute and his goal was the difference at the break.

Sentongo made it two just at the restart before later sealing off his brace in the 70th minute with a header.

Kimuli later pulled one goal for the visitors in added time but damage had already been caused.

Following their first win on Tuesday, Uganda Martyrs are now on top of group A that has teams like Bugema, Kabale University and University of Kisubi.

It is strong to note that this year’s 11th edition will have 23 teams unlike the previous seasons that had 22 teams with ISBAT University being the new comers in this year’s edition.
