The defending champions of the Pepsi University football league Uganda Martyrs will be hoping for a perfect start when they welcome Bugema University in the opening game on Tuesday.
Uganda Martyrs beat St. Lawrence University 1-0 in the finals that were held last year in Lugogo.
Then, Sunny Kaija scored the only goal as the Nkozi based University walked away with smiles to silence SLAU at Lugogo.
By beating St. Lawrence last year, it was the second trophy for Uganda Martyrs, having beaten MUBS back then in 2017 in the finals that were at Namboole.
They will be hoping for a strong start as the 11th edition of this competition gets underway.
They are under some experienced coach in Davis Nono, who has rich history in the University football league.
The defending champions are in group A alongside Bugema University, Kabale University and University of Kisubi.
This year’s edition will have 23 universities that will take part in the competition.
But unlike the previous editions, the 2023/24 University Football League will comprise of 23 Universities unlike the 22 of the previous edition.
ISBAT University are newcomers while Mbarara University of Science and Technology are not playing this season.
The University football league has over the years brought in new talents with most of them joining the top League in Uganda (UPL) and most of them flying out for greener pastures.
