Asaph Mwebaze Lands FUFA Big League Job

Former Bright Stars tactician Asaph Mwebaze is set to take over as Mbale Heroes FC head coach.

The CAF B tactician has been having negotiations with the Surgeons for weeks now, until reaching an agreement lately.

The coach is currently in town to seal the deal with Mbale’s most successful football club.

Mwebaze was also present at Mbale Stadium on Wednesday evening as Jinja-based Uganda Premier League (UPL) side BUL FC beat Mbale Heroes 1-0 in a friendly match that was relatively well attended.

However, it was coach Simon ‘Dunga’ Dungu who was on the touchline to take charge of the home side, and Mwebaze watched on from the stands as Alex Kitata scored the only goal of the game with only two minutes left on the clock to grant the visitors a slim win.

Apparently, Mbale Heroes want to utilise both Dunga and Mwebaze. The Surgeons have brought in a more experienced coach in Mwebaze, but also hope Dunga can stay to work together with him.

Formerly at Maroons, Onduparaka and Nyamityobora among other Uganda clubs, it is with the Prison Warders that the coach made a very big name for himself.

The tactician has remarkably guided Maroons FC to UPL promotion on three occasions in 2007 after 20years, 2010 and 2015.

He also won three big league titles with Maroons. He is presumably the best man for the Mbale Heroes job at the moment, as the club want nothing but UPL qualification.

The Surgeons were initially interested in bringing coach Hassan Zungu to Mbale, but he chose to go to Rwanda instead.

Former Blacks Power and BUL coach Peter Onen was also among the alternatives, but the club had settled for their former tactician Dunga, until they realised that Mwebaze was free.

He was at Bright Stars last season, where he led the team that had a somewhat decent perfomance, but left the club unceremoniously.

Bright Stars, under Mwebaze finished ninth of 15 teams in the UPL, and also eliminated KCCA FC in the quarter-final of the Stanbic Uganda Cup before losing to eventual champions Vipers SC in the semis.
