Uganda suffered their first loss at the ongoing Africa Women’s Volleyball championship in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The Lady Cranes were beaten in straight sets (3-0) by Kenya’s Malkia Strikers in a game played at the Mfandena facility in Yaounde.

After wins over Lesotho and Morocco, Uganda came up against pre-tournament favorites Kenya who eased through 25-16, 25-16 and 25-14.

As expected, Kenya dominated from onset, a manifest of their strength for a record nine-time winners of the competition.

Uganda Coach Tony Lakony commented: “It was a tough one for us. But hopefully we have learnt some lessons and gotten experience, sights onto Rwanda.

“Like I said, though it was an opportunity to test ourselves yet again before we go for the knockout stage, we need one more win to make it into the knockout. But two wins will make us finish second in the group and that’s our target.”

Kenya have lost the final to hosts Cameroon in the last three tournaments and remain hungry to win their 10th title.

Uganda continues its journey at the championship with another East African derby against Rwanda on Saturday.

It’s Uganda’s second ever appearance at this stage having made her debut back in 2007 when it was hosted in Kenya.
