Uganda Women’s National Volleyball team, the Lady Cranes, needed nerves of steel to beat Morocco at the ongoing 2023 Africa Women’s Volleyball Championship in Cameroon.

Uganda recovered from a set down (1-2) to beat Morocco 3-2 for their second win from as many games.

Uganda head coach Tony Lakony needed to make adjustments following a knee injury to middle blocker Jennifer Alungat in the first game against Lesotho and was replaced by Scholastica Akello for the Morocco clash.

The Lady Cranes got off to a flying start at the Paposy facility in Yaounde with a 25-15 first set win.

But lost the second on a tie breaker 26-28 and went down further when the Moroccans won the third set 17-25.

Uganda, on edge of defeat, then fought back with a stern fourth set, registering a 25-16 set triumph before a topsy-turvy decider set ended 15-11 to give Uganda a much deserved 3-2 sets victory.

“The team did really well and this will boost our confidence going forward,” said head Coach Lakony.

Victory over Morocco follows the day one triumph of Lesotho.

Uganda will face record winners Kenya’s Malkia Stars in an East African derby between two unbeaten countries at this championship.
