Africa Men’s Sevens: Uganda Summon Squad

Uganda 7s coach—Tolbert Onyango, and his team, have called into action a total of 22 players for training camp in a bid to prepare for the upcoming Africa Men’s Sevens tournament set to take place in Harare, Zimbabwe on 16th and 17th September 2023.

Returning to the fold is ASBC’s Phillip Wokorach, whose presence was a great boost to the team in the 2022 campaign.

The France based player was missing in action during the Challenger Series earlier this year and his absence was keenly felt in Stellenbosch.

On the other side, perhaps the biggest surprise ahead of the tournament is the absence of former captain—Michael Wokorach, and Timothy Kisiga.

Their exclusion from the summoned squad has raised questions and the rugby fraternity awaits to learn about the untold reasons behind their omission.

The camp will also brace itself with new faces as Mongers’ William Lukwago and Hippos’ Aziz Bagalana make their first appearances.

Impis speedstar—Roy Kizito and Rhinos’ Davis Shimwa will make their return to national camp in their second call ups following their first in the 2022 7s academy list for the Safari 7s.

The Africa Men’s 7s acts as a qualifier and is a pathway to the 2024 Olympics set to be played in Paris, France.

Uganda will go into this year’s campaign as the defending champions after a triumphant victory in the final against the now hosts—Zimbabwe in last year’s edition at Kyadondo and will play alongside Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso and Algeria in Pool C.
