After four circuits, KOBs were finally able to secure themselves a circuit victory in the ongoing National Rugby 7s series following their 24-0 triumph against Mongers in the Tooro 7s final.
The Blue Army had previously made it to two finals—Jinja and Rujumba, although they were not able to come off with a victory in any of them, but as they say, the third time’s the charm.
Their third show up in the final proved to be the charm in the Tooro 7s and they became only the third team to win a circuit in the ongoing sevens series, joining Pirates who have won two, and Heathens who have won one.
Their triumph was all the more significant, as it marked their second consecutive Tooro 7s title after triumphing in the previous 2022 edition.
Road to the final
Following a shock from Rams on day one that saw KOBs losing 7-5, Brian Makalama’s charges showed up with a totally different approach on day two.
Drawn against the two-time circuit winners—Pirates, in the quaterfinal, KOBs looked undeterred as they easily cruised past the Sea Robbers with a commendable 17-5 victory to send themselves into the semfinal against Hippos.
In the semifinals, KOBs convincingly emerged victorious 19-5 before meeting first time and unusual faces in the final—Mongers.
Mongers had had a great performance throughout the circuit and were about to give KOBs a run for their money. For KOBs though, it was just another easy go at claiming a victory as they were able to convincingly seal the circuit with a triumph.
With this Tooro 7s victory, KOBs have moved to the top of the series standings, with 77 points, displacing the previously leading Pirates, who have experienced a slump in their past two circuits, finishing third and fifth in the Rujumba and Tooro 7s, respectively.
The series will take a two-week break before resuming with the Kyadondo 7s on 12th and 13th August.
