Boxing Champions League: Kyobe Jonah Grits Teeth in Win

The ongoing Africa Boxing Champions League in Yaounde Cameroon did not stop the Uganda Boxing Champions League back at home to take place.

UBF decision to leave last year’s bronze medalists Joshua Tukamyhebwa and Jonah Kyobe out of the 17-man Bombers team for the Yaounde trip, turned heads.

Jonah Kyobe who made this season’s debut in Champions League on Saturday, had to squeeze past youngster Eliphaz Mbaziira by the skin of his teeth during week 7 at TLC-Kamwokya.

Kyobe had missed earlier weeks due to sickness – He was due to fight prospective and 2022 National Open best boxer Khassim Murungi during week 5 but could not make it.

And this handed Murungi a ticket to the ongoing Africa boxig championship where he has since lost on his debut in Yaounde.

Against Mbaziira on Saturday in the 5-round feather weight main fight, Kyobe was made to work for the win in a closely contested fight.

He was at the ropes in the opening two rounds as Mbaziira dominated proceedings but the S.3 student at St Jonah SS-Namugongo had his wheels fall off as the fight prolonged.

Kyobe’s experience and tenacity later came to the fore to take the third and fourth rounds, and despite a closely contested fifth round, the national team boxer had convinced the judges who gave him the fight with a unanimous decision victory.

Mbaziira, in his post-fight interview, rued lack of enough preparations to his struggles juggling books and boxing, but he remained defiant and vowed to return better.

It was another impressive show for Mbaziira who previously stunned experienced Derrick Mubiru in his debut champions league fight.

In other fights, Owen Kibira proved too good for Muhammad Ali Kawooya, with the Referee stopping the contest in the third round.

Emmanuel Tabula had a walkover against Lukanga’s Medi Lubega while Shakira Nantongo was a 5-0 winner against Sultan Mariam among other fights.
