CAF Champions League Qualifiers: Vipers To Face Botswana’s Jwaneng

Uganda Premier League champions Vipers have landed Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana is the CAF Champions League first round draw.

The Venoms visit Botswana on August 18/19 before the return leg on August 25.

If the aggregate score is tied after the second leg, the away goals rule will be applied, and if still tied, extra time will not be played, and the penalty shoot-out will be used to determine the winner.

If Vipers overcome Jwaneng Galaxy, they meet winner between South African side Orlando Pirates who are favourites against Djabel FC (Comoros), at the Second final round of the Qualifiers.

The second round dates are set at September 15/16 and 29/30 for the first and second legs respectively

Vipers qualified to the CAF Champions League group stages for the first time last season, then eliminating Olympic Real De Bangui (Central Africa) and TP Mazembe (DR Congo).

The Venoms will be hoping to return to the CAF Champions League group stages despite finishing bottom of the group that had Raja Casablanca, Simba and Horoya on their debut last season.

Egypt’s Al Ahly are the current holders of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League after their fiercely contested victory over Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca.

Jwaneng have reached the CAF Champions League once, in 2021/22 season – They eliminated Le Messager (Central Africa) and Simba (Tanzania) in the first and second round of qualifiers respectively.

Jwaneng won their second Botswana Premier League title this concluded 2022/23 season, finishing eight points above Gabarone.
