Uganda Wonen’s National basketball team, the Gazelles, have been pitted in a tough group at the 2023 FIBA Women Afrobasket.
The Gazelles will face off with African powerhouses Senegal and Mali.
The 2023 AfroBasket Women will be the 26th edition of the tournament and held from 28 July to 6 August 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Uganda booked a place to the final event after a Wild card from FIBA Africa.
The Gazelles lost 74-65 in the Zone Five final earlier this year at Lugogo to miss a direct ticket.
Mali and Senegal on the other hand, were among the four countries that didn’t go through qualifiers – They booked tickets by virtue of reaching semifinals of the 2021 Afrobasket in Yaounde.
Senegal who finished fourth in 2021, are record 11-time winners and will fancy their chances to top the group.
Mali, 2007 winners, finished second after falling 59-70 in the final against Nigeria.
The top team in each group will go direct to the Quarterfinals.
The remaining teams (2 and 3 in each group) will battle it out at the Round of 16.
If Uganda fails to top the Group, they will meet second or third-placed team in Group D that has Nigeria, Egypt and DR Congo.
Uganda will return to the Women Afrobasket for the first time since 2015 in Yaounde, Cameroon.
The Gazelles made Afrobasket debut in 1997 in Nairobi, Kenya – But has missed the past three successive editions in 2017 (Mali), 2019 (Senegal) and 2021 (Cameroon).
