Defending champions St Mary’s Kitende have progressed to the semifinals of the National Schools Football Championships after a hard fought 2-1 win over Standard High School Zana.

Kitende opened the scores through Habib Oloya who fired into the net after he was set brilliantly by Hakim Mutebi in the seventh minute.

STAHIZA fought back to level matters when Hamza Ntuyugira bundled home from close range after a well delivered corner in the second half.

But Kitende regained their advantage when Ronald Madoi (Wakiso Giants) headed a long throw-in from captain Justin Opiro.

It was a cheap goal to give away, and STAHIZA’s goalkeeper could take the blame for making a mess of the headed effort.

STAHIZA coach Yiga Juma briefly commented: “We had a lot of injuries, with about three starters out. But in football you accept what you have got.

“We have a good squad and we are going back to the drawing board and see how we can improve and prepare for next tournaments.”

Kitende, who are the defending champions, will face Amus College who eliminated record winners Kibuli SS 3-1.

Earlier, St Henry’s College Kitovu eliminated Westville High School thanks to Ernest Ankunda’s lone strike.

Two-time winners Buddo were eliminated by Royal Giants High Schools Mityana, to set up a semifinal with Kitovu.
