The long awaited national schools football boys championship kicked off in Fortportal city at various venues
The 2023 championship that is being hosted at Nyakasura school in Fortportal tourism city from sunday 7th to 21st May with 64 schools from across the country participating.
Holders St mary’s Kitende started it’s title defense journey with a master class performance outplaying Tororo Town college in a one sided game played at Kicwamba Technical Institute early morning
Kitende capitalized on set pieces to take an early 2 goals lead , in the 8th minute Ronald Madoi headed in a well crossed free kick from the left side to give the schools sports giants an early lead before pacy Abdul Nsereko doubled Kitende’s lead just after 2 minutes .
in the 17th minute midfielder hakim mutebi extended kitende’s lead with before Nyarwa Olimi sealed the defending champions first win before halftime.
Tororo town college looked to be an improved side in the second half as their resilience was unmatched.
in the 60th minute kitende had a chance of adding on their tally as Tororo town college defender handled the ball in the forbidden area and a penalty was awarded.
Habib Oloya was trusted by the coach to take the penalty but his spot kick was saved by Tororo’s goalkeeper.
The win puts Kitende at the top of the group as Group B and will face Bishop Comboni on match day II on Wednesday before the opening ceremony.

“Yes we have lost the game , the boys failed to mark well and follow the game plan hence conceding early goals due to mistakes” coach Aga Shafic of Tororo town college.
“In the second half we changed the game plan and the boys played well ,to me the boys performance was very good in the second half, we hope to build from there and comeback stronger in the next games” he adds
Male, Kitende’s coach, said: “We thank god that we have managed to win our first game, the boys put up a good display, as the defending champions our aim is to retain the trophy and to do it we have to win all our 11 games ” coach male of Kitende
“We have managed to rest some players and since this is a soccer gala where we shall not rest , we shall keep rotating our squad for the players not to get tired” the gaffer added.
In other games, Hosts Nyakasura opened up on a bad note suffering a 3-1 defeat against London College in a highly contested game played at Bukwali playground.
Fortportal based Westville high school and fortportal ss kicked off with smiles as the sides won Amus college 1-0 and Dokolo ss 5-0 respectively.
