Nam Blazers Target UCU Canons Scalp

Friday, March 31
•UCU Lady Canons Vs JT Lady Jaguars, 7pm
•Nam Blazers Vs UCU Canons, 9pm

Namuwongo Blazers will be hoping to extend their perfect start when they face UCU Canons in the National Basketball League on Friday at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.

Alongside KIU Titans, the match-up on Friday brings up the two teams that are expected to contend with City Oilers for this year’s title.

The Blazers, Last year’s beaten finalists, got off the mark last Saturday with a 71-62 victory over JKL Dolphins at YMCA Wandegeya.

Peter Cheng (16) and Geoffrey Soro (13) led the Blazers in scoring and will once again seek to be at their best.

Away from quality in comparison to last season’s roster, Namuwongo’s biggest worry this season is the thinness of their squad, with Coach Stephen ‘Esco’ Nyeko having nine players at his disposal on Friday.

The Canons on the other hand, got their campaign off to a wrong start after a 55-64 defeat against Ndejje University Angels.

They have had over a week to make amends and will be expected to come out guns blazing.

Peter Sifuma who scored a team high 18 points, and Jerry Kayanga, will be the team’s fulcrum on Friday and for the rest of the season.

It’s strong to remember that the two teams split their match-ups last season – UCU edged the opener 66-62 before the Blazers won the second round tie 64-61.

Both teams were stopped by eventual champions City Oilers last season; UCU were beaten in the semis before Namuwongo lost a seven-game thrilling finals series.

Probable Starting 5s
*Nam Blazers – Syrus Kiviiri, Paul Odong, Geoffrey Soro, Peter Cheng, Michael Makiadi

*UCU Canons – Jimmy Otim, Jerry Kayanga, Lwabaga Ibanda, John Baptist Dauna, Peter Sifuma
