Namuwongo Blazers rallied past JKL Dolphins in their first game of the 2023 National Basketball League Season.
The Blazers, in terms of personnel, looked different from the side that pushed Oilers to game seven last season.
Peter Cheng (16), Geoffrey Soro (13) and Michael Makiadi (10) who scored in double digits, were not involved in last year’s final.
Syrus Kiviiri also had 11 points and he will be hoping for a better and healthy season this time round.
New signing Nasser ‘Kikiri’ Guddi had four points, while the other addition Dickson Asiku never stepped on court.
It’s a positive start for a side that lost a big chunk of players from last season including Saidi Amisi, Ariel Okall, Collins Kasujja, David Deng among others.
Nam Blazers started slowly and were 10-14 down after the first quarter. But Stephen Nyeko’s side who were cheered on by a sizeable crowd, regained their mojo and were up by four at halftime.
It remained a closely contested affair, but the Blazers outlasted the Dolphins to turn their league opening fixture into a win.
The Blazers are not loaded as last season, but this win will act as a springboard to propel the side forward.
It’s strong to note that JKL beat the Blazers 62-57 and 73-65 in the regular season last year.
Denis Tom Omara had 15 points, Bienfait Lola and Martin Janvier added 13 and 11 points respectively, in a losing effort.
