Express FC have progressed to the Stanbic Uganda Cup last 16 after eliminating Lugazi FC thanks to Allan Kayiwa’s first half penalty.
The Red Eagles, who have won this competition a joint-record 10 times, hosted the game at Luzira Prisons ground as Wankulukuku was not available.
Lugazi FC, a Big League side, wILL feel they deserved a better result on the day after a good display despite playing a man-less for the biggest part of the game.
The hosts struggled to create chances and failed to capitalise on the numerical advantage.
The game was decided by a moment of madness by Lugazi FC Goalkeeper Watmon Florence.
Watmon was dispossessed by Express striker Marvin Oshaba before fouling an onrushing Kayiwa who was racing to rebound at a very tight angle.
Kayiwa stepped up to calmly send the Custodian the wrong way from the spot to give Express the lead in the 23rd minute.
Towards the end of the first half, Lugazi FC were reduced to 10 men after Agunda Arafat was shown second yellow card for an elbow on Kayiwa.
The hosts went into the break with a goal and numerical advantage.
The second half was cagey as both sides failed to create clear goal scoring opportunities.
Ssenoga Hussein twice shot from a distance but in vain.
On the otherside, substitute Ogweti Gerald tried to battle with the Red Eagles defenders but he couldn’t be afforded any space.
Express now joins Vipers, Onduparaka, Wakiso Giants, BUL, Bright Stars, Kitara FC, Mbarara City, Police FC, Ndejje University, Kisugu United and Bunyaruguru United among others in the Round of 16.
