Uganda Cup: Bright Stars Eject 10-man Mbale Heroes on Penalties

Uganda Premier League side Bright Stars needed penalty shootouts to eliminate 10-man Eastern Regional League side Mbale Heroes from the Stanbic Uganda Cup at Mbale city stadium.

Mukisa Junior’s 86th minute equaliser cancelled out Emmanuel Loki’s 69th minute header to force a stalement after normal time.

Mbale Heroes finished the game a man less after Amos Etoju was shown red card after a second bookable offence on Omony Kaka.

And goalkeeper Hassan Matovu saved Mark Bamukyaye’s penalty to send the UPL side through.

Shootouts at Mbale Municipal stadium

After a cagey first half that saw both teams fail to find the back the net, the first goal of the game came in the 69th minute after Loki headed home a well taken cross by Omony after Etoju was sent off in the 62nd minute.

With four minutes to the end of the game, Mukisa restored parity in the 86th minute to force the game into shootouts.

Nelson Senkatuka, Emmanuel Loki, Ibrahim Kasinde and Warren Buule all scored their penalties.

Bamukyaye Mark missed from the penalty for the hosts before Mukisa, Nsamba Fahad and Lubangakene Goeffrey were all on target.

Bright stars join Vipers, Mbarara City, Wakiso Giants and Kitara in the Round of 16.
