Hosts Algeria needed a stoppage time penalty to overcome a resilient Ivory Coast side to reach the semifinals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

In a match that had a player sent off for either side in the first half, Aimen Mahious converted from the spot to send the home crowd in wild celebrations.

Aimen was brought down in the box by Aziz Siahone and the penalty was awarded after VAR review, before the USM Algiers forward scored his third goal of the tournament.

Algeria was reduced to ten men earlier in the 19th minute after their goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz was sent off but Ivory Coast, few minutes later, also had Kouassi Attohoula given a straight red card for dangerous play.

Elsewhere, Lamine Camara scored from the spot as Senegal knocked out Mauritania at Annaba.

Algeria will meet winner between Niger and Ghana while Senegal face either Madagascar and Mozambique.
