Madagascar stunned Sudan to reach the quarterfinals of this year’s African Nations Championship on their debut.
It’s a success story for the Island nation who qualified for the first time to this tournament in Algeria having earlier beaten Seychelles and Botswana.
Win over Ghana, Sudan and Morocco (walkover) have seen Madagascar finish on top of Group C with maximum points.
Morocco, which was initially set to be the fourth team in the group, announced their withdrawal from the tournament on 12 January 2023, after hosts Algeria refused to allow the squad to take a direct flight from Rabat to Constantine via their national airline and official carrier sponsor, Royal Air Maroc.
And on Monday, three first half goals at the Chahid Hamlaoui stadium in Constatine ensured that Madagascar send Sudan packing.
Tokinantenaina ‘Tsiry’ Randriatsiferana, Solomampionona Razafindranaivo and Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa were on target.
Ghana also reached the knockout after a walkover against Morocco, the third time after 2009 and 2014 to go past the group stages.
Nicknamed Barea, Madagascar will play Mozambique at the Quarterfinals on January 28.
