Walukuba Here to Compete – Coach Leo

Newcomers Walukuba Barbarians are not going to be a walk in the park according to their head coach coach Leonard Lubambula.

The Jinja-based side are back in the league for the first time since they were relegated back in 2019.

They were however fortunate to make the top flight promotion this time after losing the playoffs final to Boks, KOBs’ feeder side, 15-13.

In dramatic turn of events, the Uganda Rugby Union rescinded BOKs’ eligibility after failure to meet the necessary requirements.

Leo said that the decision was very welcoming for Walukuba.

“It’s a great opportunity for us as a club, we have taken it with a huge excitement to showcase our talents and gain optimum exposure for our club,” Leo stated.

“As you know it is very tough to get promotion to the Premier. You have to go through regional competition and then a championship play off. And this comes with a lot of financial constraints including traveling regions.”

Leo is confident that they have laid down plans to enable them stay in top flight.

“One of our biggest downfall back in 2019 was due to financial constraints and player training turn up,” Leo added.

“We have laid strategy for us to be sustainable in this league.”

He however bemoans a short preseason window: “To be honest we have had a short pre season like any other team that was into the 7s then Uganda cup but we re up to the challenge.”

They open their campaign with a trip to Kampala to face title chasers KOBs at Legends.

And Leo has expressed confidence in his squad having promoted a couple of players their junior team and acquired one player from Mombasa RFC.

Leo added: “I am looking forward to seeing the progress of my team in terms of tactical and technical development and be able to hang in the league for another season. That’s growth. I am excited too.”

On whether they have what it takes to compete favourably, he commented: “We are here to compete not to participate – Clear example was the just concluded national 7s where we had a brilliant run and we will replicate that.”
