AFCON U20: Uganda Hippos Learn Group Opponents

2023 AFCON U20 Groups:

*Group A – Egypt, Mozambique, Senegal, Nigeria

*Group B – Uganda, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Congo

*Group C – The Gambia, Tunisia, Benin, Zambia


Uganda’s U20 Men’s national football team, the Hippos, have been pitted in Group B of the forthcoming 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The draw conducted in Cairo, Egypt, has seen Uganda placed in the Group that also has Central Africa Republic, South Sudan and Congo.

The tourney will take place from 19 February to 11 March 2023.

The host cities are Cairo (Group A), Ismailia (Group B) and Alexandria (Group C).

Uganda Hippos will be making their second appearance at the tournament after their successful debut in 2021 in Mauritania.

Then, Uganda reached the final where they were beaten by Ghana 2-0 in the final, in a tournament where Striker Derrick Kakooza finished as the top scorer with five goals.

The Hippos, coached by Jackson Mayanja, qualified to the 2023 tournament through the CECAFA U20 tournament held last month in Sudan.

They won the tournament after beating South Sudan 2-1 in the final thanks to goals from Issa Bugembe and Titus Ssematimba.
