Preview: The Wakiso Derby

In-form Bright Stars host wounded neighbors Wakiso Giants in Uganda Premier league game at Kavumba recreation grounds.

After going winless in their seven opening matches, Bright Stars have bounced back with four straight wins since their first win of the season 28 days back.

They are hosting the Purple Sharks at the back of a 1-0 away win against Busoga United having beaten BUL 2-0, Express 2-0 and Onduparaka 2-1.

The four wins in a row where they have conceded only once and scored seven, have seen them climb to 7th with 17 points from 11 games.

Away from their disciplined defence, their danger-man on striking line Nelson Senkatuuka has scored five of their seven goals in those four straight wins.

They have only lost once at home this season so far, which was a 1-0 loss against SC Villa, and it’s that statistic which gives coach Asaph Mwebaze hope that his side will be able to pull it off in this derby.

“The team is in good spirits, prepared for the game, this is a very big game because it’s a derby for Wakiso teams, we play a similar style and you are going to see a very entertaining game,” said Mwebaze.

“Hopefully we shall pull it off because we are at home and we have been having a good run and hopefully we shall continue with our run.”

Last season’s fixture ended 1-0 in Bright Stars favour influenced by Joshua Lubwama’s own goal in the 40th minute.

Sam Ssenyonjo who was in the starting eleven of Wakiso Giants which lost 1-0 last season, is now going to be on the other side in blue Jersey.

Wakiso Giants will be seeking to return to winning ways after their last two defeats which ended their nine matches unbeaten run.

After being on the top of the table for two weeks (Nov 18-Dec 2), the Visitors have slipped away to 5th, following a 2-1 loss against BUL and 3-2 loss against Busoga United in their last game.

Despite being fifth on the log with 21 points, they are just four points adrift of leaders KCCA, meaning that this will be a much needed win to keep their UPL dream alive as the first round nears its end.

However, they only have two wins in six outings made this season, they defeated UPDF 1-0 before beating SC Villa 2-1.

“The previous two games, we have had lapses in the way we defend but we have tried to work on our defending and I believe we shall be spot on,” Coach Luyinda speaking to club media.

“They are in great form with a good technical team and have combination a quality of experience as well as speedy players, but as usual, we have the ability to handle each game in every way possible.”

In six times they have met in the league, Bright Stars have won twice, Wakiso once, and no side has ever lost as a host.
