Netball World Cup: She Cranes Learn Opponents

The Uganda National Netball team, the She cranes, has learnt its fate at 2023 Netball World Cup to be hosted in Cape Town, South Africa.

With the tournament slated to begin on July 28 – August 6, 2023, competed among 16 teams, She Cranes was already pitted in Pool D alongside holders and world number two New Zealand as per the other member of top eight who were already seeded in other three pools.

In the official draw conducted on Wednesday evening at East London, Eastern cape in South Africa saw the remaing eight team completing the puzzle of the much anticipated big stage in the world of Netball.

She Crane’s other pool D opponents include; the 1979 champion and world number 11 the Calypso girls of Trindad & Tobago together with lowly seeded Singapore.

This is the third consecutive appearance for She Crane since it’s return to the tournament in 2015 after 36 years, following their debut in 1979, Trinidad and Tobago.

This is the 16th edition, however, it’s the first time the tournament is gracing the African soil and Liz Nicholl the World Netball president said it’s time for Africa to shine

“It is very exciting to be at this stage of the competition, with all 16 teams confirmed and congratulations to all the teams that vied for success in the qualifier tournaments”, said Liz Nicholl.

“It was a joy to see the matches broadcast widely around the world, reaching new audiences, and giving our sport the visibility it deserves.

“It is Africa’s time to shine.”

How teams have been drawn

Pool A: Australia, Tonga, Zimbabwe, Fiji

Pool B: England, Malawi, Scotland, Barbados

Pool C: SA, Jamaica, Wales, Sri Lanka

Pool D: New Zealand, Uganda, Trinidad & Tobago, Singapore
