City Oilers will meet Cape Town in the crucial semifinals of the ongoing of the BAL Elite 16 East Division Qualifiers in South Africa.

This is after the Oilers finished top of their group with a deserved 88-72 victory over Ferroviario da Beira on Thursday at the Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg.

The eight-time Uganda champions quickly got out of their blocks to lead 23-15 after the first quarter and maintained their advantage before sealing a deserved win.

Ngor Barnaba, Falando Jones and Germaine Roeburg scored 17 points each while James Okello and Fayed Baale added 10 each.

William Perry (21) and Ismael Nurmamade (11) combined for 32 points for Beira but it proved not enough.

The Oilers finish the group stage with three wins from as many games having beaten COSPN and Matero Magic in the first two games.

“We have been getting better with every game. It’s something we have talked about and I am happy the players are responding. You can see there is a huge difference from the opening game to the last,” City Oilers coach Mandy Juruni told FIBA.

“Now we are going to the stage where it matters, and in the back of our minds we know we have not done anything.”

It’s the next stage that is crucial as winners of the semifinal ties qualify for the BAL final tournament due next year in Rwanda.

Cape Town Tigers will offer a tougher challenge for Oilers as they will be boosted by a raucous home crowd.

They finished second in the other group following that final defeat to Burundi’s Urunani. They had beaten NBA Academy 85-60 before overcoming KPA (Kenya) 96-72.

The Tigers finished at the Quarterfinals in the previous BAL edition while Oilers are targeting for their first qualification.
