City Oilers started their Elite 16 of the Basketball Africa League qualification campaign off to a flyer with a 71-59 victory over Madagascar’s COSPN in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Oilers dominated from the word go and were 22-11 up after the first quarter before establishing a 21-point gap at the long break.
They were however pegged back in the third quarter when COSPN dag deep to reduce the gap to just nine points going into the last quarter.
But the Oilers held on to win the game 71-59 to get off the mark in style.
Germaine Roebuck shot 7-of-14 from the field to garner 17 points, and Falando Cortez Jones and Titus Lual Odeke added 15 and 11 points respectively.
Jimmy Enabu (9 points) and Uche Nnamdi (8 rebounds) were the other top contributors for the Oilers.
Elly Randriamampionona and Alpha Solondrainy had 14 and 10 points respectively for COSPN who struggled to match the Oilers’ speed and quality.
The oilers were outrebounded 47-53 but minimized their turnovers with 15 against COSPN’s 22.
Needing a win to seal a place in the semis, the Oilers face Matero Magic of Zambia on Tuesday, a side they beat in the Road To BAL last month before they got a call to replace South Sudan’s Cobra Sports.
