University Football League: Uganda Martyrs Clinch Second Title

Uganda Martyrs university have been crowned champions of the Pepsi University football league following their 1-0 win over St. Lawrence University on Saturday.

Kaija Sanny scored the all important goal of day to ensure that the Nkozi based University bagged another trophy.

Sanny tapped in home in the 28th minute off a well taken corner from Kayondo Joseph and his goal turned out winner.

It is the second title for Uganda Martyrs, having won it in 2017 when they beat Mubs 2-0 at Namboole stadium.

For SLAU, it was a bad day for them and as well suffered a second successive defeat at the final. They had lost the previous one to UCU back in 2019.

On Saturday, Uganda Martyrs started the better side, made endless attacks with St. Lawrence at the receiving end.

Earlier, Sanny and Aguma Wesley were denied by St. Lawrence goalkeeper Kimera Lawrence as they searched for the opener.

And the endlless efforts finally paid off in the 28th minute through Sanny, who found himself in the right place at the right time to tap in home off a well taken corner from Kayondo.

Uganda Martyrs could have scored more before the break but Sanny and Aguma were too wasteful Infront of goal.

For SLAU, their star man Bruno Bunyaga’s effort was kept out for a corner before Captain Umar Kayemba was denied twice from free kicks.

After the break, St. Lawrence tried to stage a come back but were once again denied by a well organized Uganda Martyrs side.

Bunyaga, who has been brilliant for SLAU this season was once again wasteful Infront of goal to sum up a poor evening for his side.

And in the end, Uganda Martyrs held on to win their second title in this competition.

Elsewhere, UCU Cardinals beat MUBS 4-3 on penalties to clinch 3rd place, with Geoffrey Gaganga scoring the winning penalty for UCU. At normal time, the game has ended 1-1.

The university football is proudly sponsored by Pepsi as the official sponsors of the league and it has produced a couple of players with some of the even in the top tier, the Uganda premier League.
