Uganda Hippos beat South Sudan 2-1 to win the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers tournament.

Both teams came into the final having sealed tickets to the 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations due next year in Egypt.

And the Hippos recovered from down through goals from Issa Bugembe and Titus Ssematimba.

South Sudan took an early lead at Al Hilal Stadium through Felix Abishai who tapped in a neat cross in the 15th minute.

Seven minutes later, Bugembe leveled matters for Uganda when he chested down a loose ball before sending a powerful effort from outside the box into the back of the net.

Jackson Mayanja’s charges then went ahead just after the hour-mark when Sudan failed to deal with a searching Justine Opira cross for Ssematimba to squeeze it across the line.

And the Hippos held on until the final whistle to defend the title they won in 2020 in Tanzania before going on to reach the Continental final on their debut last year in Mauritania.

Uganda Hippos Starting XI – Abdu Magada, Justine Opiro, Ibrahim Juma, Ronald Madoi, Rogers Torach, Frank Katongole, Rogers Mugisha, Isma Mugulusi, Titus Ssematimba, Haruna Lukwago, Issa Bugembe
