Kassim ‘The Dream’ Ouma: The Homecoming

Renown Boxer Kassim ‘The Dream’ Ouma will for the first time fight in Uganda since defecting to United States in 1998.

Ouma will face off with Kenyan Rayton Okwiri, an African Boxing Union Champion, for the fight slated on Boxing Day December 26 2022 at Lugogo Cricket Oval.

Stephen Ssembuya, the CEO of 12 Sports Round, who is the brain behind the fight, confirmed the developments in a Press conference held on Wednesday at Copper Chimney in Lugogo.

The fight has been dubbed ‘Rumble in Kampala’ with artistes headlined by Winnie Nwagi and King Saha lined up to entertain revellers.

“We are delighted to tell you that Ouma will be fighting in Uganda for the first time since he left the country over 20 years back,” said Ssembuya.

“He is a legend and fought with some of the best fighters during his spell in the United States.

” He has represented our country with honour, the national anthem has been sung uncounted times during his fights and has raised our flag high.

“And now it’s our time to welcome him and thank him for what he has done. He is our own. And we want him to inspire the young boxers to pursue their dreams.”

The organisers have lined up a couple of undercards, with action starting as early as midday.

Ouma, who also garnered much media coverage after his relationship with singing sensational Juliana Kanyomoozi, is expected to land in the country on December 15.

A report said that he was forced to kill as a boy soldier at that young age.

Ouma has an emotional story to tell, and his, has been publicised a couple of times.

He was born in December 1978 in Maga Maga, Iganga.

In an interview with The Guardian (UK Press), Ouma said that he was kidnapped and forced to join the National Resistance Army and consequently did not see his family for five years.

He started Boxing and was later part of the team that was supposed to fight at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta (United States), but did not attend because of financial constraints.

He then fled the country to United States in 1998, and it is also alleged that his father was beaten to death by the army in retaliation for his leaving of the country.

Known for his aggressive style in the ring, Ouma rose to boxing heights and was involved in big fights including a WBA middleweight title against Gennadiy Golovkin in June 2011 in Panama.

His boxrec reads 47 fights, 29 wins (18 KO’s), 16 defeats and a draw.
