Uganda Martyrs Beat UCU on Penalties to Reach Finals

Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi eliminated defending champions UCU on penalties to reach this year’s pepsi University football league finals.

At normal time, Kaija Sunny scored the only goal in the 67th minute to put his side back into the contest.

UCU had won the first leg 1-0 in Mukono, courtesy of Isaac Oforywoth’s goal.

After a goalless first half in Nkozi, the hosts Uganda Martyrs returned the better side and it paid off with seven minutes past the hour mark through Kaija.

UCU tried to hunt for an equaliser but in the closing stages but the hosts remained composed at the back.

With the scoreline on aggregate back to the level, it meant that this tie could only be decided on penalties.

In penalities, goal scorer Kaija turned out to the hero as he scored the decisive spot kick that sent the home crowd into wild celebrations.

Kitabalwa Robert captain Masudi Kafumbe, Kayongo Joseph and Odoi Valentino all scored their respective penalties to ensure that Uganda Martyrs reached the finals.

On the other hand, Anjole Godfrey, Jurua Francis, Gagganga Geofrey all scored their respective penalties while Lubega Sharif and Mbalaga David were denied on the day.

Uganda Martyrs will now face the aggregate winner between St . Lawrence and Mubs who are the other semi finalists.

The Nkozi based university will be seeking for their second title having won it in 2017 when they beat Mubs 2-0 at Namboole stadium.

For UCU, who are won the title in 2019 and were defending champions, they will have to wait till next year .
