Police FC will be hoping to kickoff their operation to return UPL with maximum points when they face Lugazi in their opening fixture of the 2022/23 FUFA Big League season.

Police will be one of the favourites, alongside Mbarara City, to earn a ticket to the top flight.

They were relegated to Big League after finishing 14th (third from bottom) with 28 points from 30 games.

That, ended their stay in Premier League after 26 years having earned UPL promotion on 1995.

During that brilliant spell, they won the league in 2005 and recently went on to establish themselves as one of the teams that play attractive football under coach Abdallah Mubiru.

Mubiru was sacked before the end of last season after a poor run of results, and a new man in charge in Angelo Lonyesi who is returning at the club, has one role to play – to steer the team back to top flight.

They will be hosting games at Kavumba, not Lugogo.

And among other changes, the team has a new chairman in Senior Senior Commissioner of Police Timothy Halango, after the exit of Asan Kasingye.

One of the main reasons as to why Police were relegated, is the failure of the institution to provide adequate and timely renumeration of the players, and Halango who met the players this week, has pledged his support.

A couple of players including Tonny Mawejje (retired), Eric Ssenjobe, Yusuf Ssozi, Frank Kalanda have left the club.

Captain Joseph Seentume, Herman Wasswa, Samuel Kayongo, Tonny Kiwalazi are some of the players who remained at the club.

But they will not be with Eddy Kapampa and Ismail Kyambadde whose injuries may rule them out of the whole season.

Defender Ibrahim Kibumba and goalkeeper Davis Mutebi were unveiled among the 16 new arrivals, with the duo making a return to the club.

In Lugazi FC, they face a side that is also new in the division having earned promotion from Buganda Regional League.

Lugazi beat Kajjansi United in a final at Kavumba 1-0 courtesy of Louis Anguti’s strike.

The club recently unveiled their squad that include 10 players who were retained from the team that gained promotion.

The retained players include last season’s Buganda Regional League top scorer, Gerald Ogweti who will be carrying the scoring burden.

The new signings include MYDA FC duo of Faizo Muledhu, Lubega Muhammed Gift (URA FC), Mwanje Derrick (Kataka FC), Fadili Morjan (Bul FC) and Okello Tabu (SC Villa Junior Team) among others.
