Martha Babirye Swings To Third Ladies Open Title

How they finished (Top Five):

  1. Martha Babirye – 233
  2. Meron Kyomugisha – 238
  3. Peace Kabasweka – 241
  4. Evah Magala – 252
  5. Gloria Mbaguta – 254

Martha Babirye pushed her fist up in the air, tipped her cap to a supportive crowd, before basking in glory after putting on the 18th hole on Saturday evening at the Par-72 Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort in Kigo.

Babirye had lived to her billing after managing to win the Ladies Open during the 2022 Tusker Malt Uganda Golf Open.

She shot 17 over par 233 to conclude the final day three on top of a stacked leaderboard.

Babirye who had won the title in 2019 and 2020, led with five shots ahead of Meron Kyomugisha and Peace Kabasweka who finished second and third respectively.

Martha Babirye speaking with the press

“I am so excited to have my third Ladies Open,” Babirye told the press who ambushed her the moment she stepped off the green.

Babirye led on Day One by four shots but the gap was reduced to one on Day two as Kabasweka mounted pressure.

“I normally chase, so even if I am leading, I don’t count those days. I just came and say today I have to get the best gross to win. I played it calm,” Babirye commented on the strategy.

“My putting was good and my drive was on point. I didn’t go in any water or bunker. I just stayed away from any hazard.”

Martha Babirye and Tusker Malt’s Kamanyire

Commenting on her opponent Kyomugisha who finished second, Babirye said: “She is very good and she also had a good day today.”

“I just want to thank Madam Doreen Mwesigye who supported me when I came back from Tanzania – she paid my coach and everything.”

It was a good show of character for Babirye who had failed to defend the title last year when she finished third behind champion Irene Nakalembe and then second placed Mercy Nyanchama (Kenya).

The Uganda Golf Open is sponsored by Tusker Malt who injected Sh600m into this year’s event.

Toast to the golf goddess

Mark Ethan Kamanyire, Key Accounts Manager UBL, commented during the 19th hole awards presentation: “”I want to thank all the Ladies who took to the course and participated in all the 18 holes and congratulations to all different winners.”

“I want to appreciate Uganda Golf Union, Tusker Malt has been part of most activities of Uganda Golf, and with experience you have put out today, we would like to appreciate you and we look at you as valuable partners and pledge our support as Tusker Malt.”

Next up is the Seniors event on October 14-15 while the Amateurs will come in on October 19-22 before the Pros on October 25-29.
