Godfrey Lwesibawa scored Uganda’s winning goal in extra time as the Sand Cranes beat former champions Mozambique 8-7 to finish third at the COSAFA BEACH SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP, in Durban South Africa on Saturday.
Uganda led the way in the first period that ended 4-1 with goals from Lwesibawa, Ambrose Kigozi, Isma Kawawulo, and Jonathan Kikonyogo whilst Mozambique’s Angelo Tomas scored his side’s lone goal in the period.
The other two intervals saw Mozambique make a surprise recovery into the contest after Antonio Namape Jr snuck past Samson Kirya to add to Nelson Manuel’s five goals that included a second-period hat-trick.
Isma Kawawulo and Brian Nkuubi would later pick-up a brace each, before Lwesibawa’s impressive free kick in extra time handed Uganda a much-deserved 8-7 victory, making the most goals scored in a single game at the tournament (15).
Uganda advanced to the semi-finals as second best from group B after losing to Egypt in their final group game to match them against group A leaders Senegal.
The Sand Cranes then lost the semis 10-3 to Senegal who would later defeat Egypt in the finals to win the 2022 edition of the COSAFA Beach Soccer championship.
Uganda’s Ambrose Kigozi totaled nine goals from the tournament to finish a spot behind Mozambique’s Nelson Manuel who marked 13 goals to lead the top-scorer’s chart.
