KCCA FC saw off Wakiso Giants in a five goal thriller in their opening game of the 2022/2023 UPL season at Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.

Midfielder Ashraf Mugume came off the bench to score a brace, while Geoffrey Wasswa added one to power the Kasasiro boys past Wakiso Giants.

Goals from Owen Kasule and a late penalty from Tom Masiko couldn’t rescue the Purple Sharks who got their campaign under coach John Ayala Luyinda off to a wrong start.

The match was watched by a good crowd as most KCCA fans came to get a glimpse of their new signings mainly the return of prodigal son Allan Okello.

Okello couldn’t influence the game as he would have wanted in his second debut, in comparison to his hat-trick against Onduparaka on his first debut back in 2017.

But he complimented well with another new signing in Moses Waiswa in the middle of the park.

Another new pair of forwards Shaban Muhammad and Kakonde Tisungu started up front, but none could get off the mark.

With just 10 minutes into the game, a Shaban powerful header went wide off a cross from Brian Majwega and also debutant Saidi Mayanja hit the side net as they pressed Wakiso Giants.

Moments later, goalkeeper Ali Mwirusi was called into KCCA FC rescue as he brilliantly punched out a shot from Sharif Kimboowa who pounced on a loose ball in their defence.

Striker Tisungu Kakonde saw his free kick hit the cross bar and went out after curving it brilliantly above the defending wall.

Wakiso Giants had a couple of chances but Kimbowa seemed to have a dull day as he looked not to be sharp infront of goal.

In the second stanza, debutant Waiswa set up Mugume who sent in a rocket shot to beat goalkeeper Bashir Sekagya for the opener as KCCA FC took the lead in the 51st minute.

A Saidi Mayanja well-taken corner kick was headed in the back of the net by defender Geoffrey Wasswa to double KCCA FC lead in the 66th minute as the defender bagged his first goal in the yellow jersey.

The Purple Sharks halved the deficit when Ibrahim Kasule slotted in after he was set up by Moses Aliro.

With just two minutes after Wakiso scored a consolation, Arafat Usama set up Mugume for his second goal on the day to fire in from outside in the 84th minute.

With just two minutes to stoppage time, captain John Revita was cautioned for pulling in the forbidden area and a penalty was awarded to Wakiso and converted by Tom Masiko to reduce the deficit, 3-2, but it was little too late.

KCCA FC take maximum points ahead of a perfect start in the season and their next game will be up against Arua Hill.
