*Maroons Target Strong Start On Return to UPL

Returning from its fifth relegation spell since it’s inception, a 57-year old Maroons FC will be making its 20th season appearance in Uganda Premier when they host Busoga United in their 2022/23 season opener at Luzira.

After suffering pre mature relegation in 2020 due to covid 19 pandemic, the club has since made tremendous visible efforts which bought them a deserving return back to UPL where they are ready to compete.

“We had a wonderful pre season with good friendlies, physically, mentally and emotionally ready to begin the season, we are facing a touch opponent in Busoga but confident in the entire team explain why this time round we are not going to make a one season appearance, we are so positive,” Team Captain David Ndihabwe.

With Busoga being their first hurdle, they will even be more eager, looking forward to getting their first ever win against the side they have faced six times in the league.

Facing Busoga in previous games, they have managed just only four draws with the rest being losses which they have suffered in their own back yard, Luzira Prison Grounds.

Well, the wish for first win against Busoga looks achievable having made some key notable signings highlighted by Andrew Kigozi from KCCA, Brian Nkuubi (URA) and Vipers duo of Lawrence Tezikya and Umar Kyebatala who are on loan.

The total of over 12 new players, all ready to stimulate the side which didn’t lose a single match at home in the whole of big league compaign last season.

Other new signings include; Frederick Kigozi (BUL FC), Sula Mpanga (Vipers SC), Simon Tamale (Soltilo Bright Stars FC ,Isaac Mpagi (Tooro United), Jacob Okao (Vipers SC), Arafat Kakonge (Police FC) and Noel Nassasira (Gaadiidka FC Somalia)

They also had a couple of good test pre friendly matches against stronger sides which included a 2-1 win against KCCA FC after humbling Kampla University 4-0, thus putting them in better position to frustrate thier opponent who handled transfer market otherwise.

Long Season Await Busoga United

Last season, Busoga survived relegation by a whisker, finishing the season in 13th position, with just points above Police FC who completed the relegation puzzle to join Mbarara City and Tooro.

The worst was yet to come for Abbey Kikomeko who faces the toughest times at Busoga since leading the side to top flight in 2015/16 season.

The club was hit with Management and administration issues as row erupted between former Chairperson Hope Diana Nyago and her predecessor Hassan Takoowa, but with recent developments, Nyago is back at the helm.

With Kiwanuka in as coach, he has his work cut out after the departure of 12 players: Anwar Nyege, Mayanja Anthony, Shaka ssozi, Ssekulima, Vincent Ziwa, Ngondwe Elvis, Paul, Dalton Oyo Ekellot Ibrahim, Ekoyu Daniel, Opolot Phillian, Micheal Nantamu and
Amber

But given their history with Maroons, Kikomeko wouldn’t wish to start the season with any other opponent better than Maroons

The two wins fashioned in their six meetings, belong to Busoga, including a 1-0 win at Luzira in February 2021 when the two last faced each other, thanks to Paul Sekulima’s late winner.

Another positive is the zeal and a strong belief of new team captain Derrick Basoga who thinks that his side can very well finish in the top four given the intense preparation his side had behind curtains.

“We have really had good preparation ahead of new season, yes we have lost players but we as well made some strong additions secretly,” Basoga told The-SportsNation.

“I am very much confident that we going to put up a undistributed winning performance and we are looking forward to finishing in top four or atleast not beyond 7th if things don’t go according to plan.”

Busoga had a couple of pre season community tour matches, where they won four against Jinja North United (1-0), Mpumudde United (2-0), Bugiri De School (2-1), Kaliro NTC Select (3-2) and two one all draws against Kaliro Select and Jinja Municiple FC.
