On their return to Uganda Premier League, Maroons handed Busoga United a season opener they will never forget after a 5-0 thumping at Luzira.

Debutants Isaac Mpagi and Noel Nasasira were on target and so are Solomon Walusimbi and Fred Amaku, with the latter notching a brace.

It is a poor start for Paul Kiwanuka and his charges who received a beating in front of their Chairperson Hope Diana Nyago.

This was Maroons first win against Busoga United in seven meetings.

On the other hand, it was Busoga’s most humiliating defeat ever, in their opening game of the league since gaining promotion in 2015/16 season.

The match was delayed for over 20 minutes following the visitors jerseys coming in late.

There was indeed little expected from them to tame Maroons side which had five new strong signings in the starting eleven who dominated the proceedings straight away.

In 11th minute, Amaku had already set Mpagi with a well laid beautiful pass from the left to take a deserved early lead.

Five minutes later, a very quick Amaku scored in an empty net after beating goalkeeper Sanon Mulabi to make it 2-0.

Three minute later, Captain Basoga nearly brought the visitors back into the game but his free-kick near the box edge, denied by the crossbar before cleared away by Lawrence Tezikya.

In the 26th minute, Unmarked Amaku headed in his brace in yet another empty net to make it 3-0, following Solomon Walusimbi’s well calculated cross which left Busoga’s backline reeling.

The second half saw a different Busoga United which tried to dominate proceedings, however they failed to utilize the few chances they created.

In the 57th minute, Mweru had a chance to pull one back for his side but his header off Bashamu’s cross went over the bar.

Eight minutes later, captain Basoga was presented with a free opportunity of a penalty kick following Kitagenda’s foul on Bushamu, but the kick was comfortably saved by Tamale to keep his clean-sheet intact.

Things gotten more frustrating to visitors in 70th minute when Walusimbi poked in the rebound to make it 4-0, following Amaku’s initial attempt which was spilled by Mulabi.

Four minutes later, Substitute Noel Nasasira made it 5-0 when he headed in Kitagenda’s cross into the top left corner.

Maroons will visit Bright Star in their next fixture on Tuesday while Busoga will host Blacks Power on Wednesday.
