Allan Kayiwa’s strike on his Express debut was not enough as the Red Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw against UPDF in their league opener at Bombo Barracks.
But another debutant in Farid Achumu who came off the bench, ensured that UPDF start their new campaign with a point.
And both sides settled for a draw as Express’ avoided a loss at Bombo for the first time in four visits.
UPDF Goalkeeper Mutumba was the busiest in the opening exchanges as the visitors pressed for an early opener.
On the otherside, UPDF new Signing Pius Kaggwa nut-megged two Express defenders in the box but he was later dispossessed by Derrick Ngoobi but Oyirwoth’s cross was high for Ivan Ahimbisibwe.
Kayiwa nearly gave the visitors the lead from the free-kick at the edge of the box but it went over the bar before he was teed up by Ivan Mayanja a moment later.
UPDF Goalkeeper made a decent catch to deny Anwar Ntege a pinpoint header from close range off Kayiwa’s cross.
Kaggwa could have given the hosts the lead from Donato Okello’s pass but he was denied in a one on one by the Goalkeeper Denis Otim before Ibrahim Wammanah’s rebound was cleared off the line by Derrick Ngoobi.
Joseph Akandwanaho missed from close range after Kasozi miscleared the ball on his path as Express pushed for the opener.
Kayiwa broke the deadlock for the visitors in the 60th minute following a nice pass from Ntege who held the ball before releasing the unmarked winger whose shot went past a helpless Goalkeeper.
Mugisha nearly equalised for the hosts but his long range effort went wide.
Substitute Achumu restored parity in the 64th minute after Goalkeeper Otim failed to collect a low pass that went between his legs from Mugisha at the near post.
The Visitors would have won it very late but Kayiwa’s effort went over the bar.
What next – Both sides will return to action on Saturday 8th October as UPDF travel away to BUL at the FUFW Technical Centre Njeru while Express welcome URA at the Mutesa II Stadium Wankulukuku.
