Uganda Cranes have been pitted in a tricky Group B at the 2022 African Nations Championships following Saturday’s draw conducted in Algiers.
Headlining the Pool is two-time defending champions DR Congo while West African sides Senegal and Ivory Coast complete Group B.
The tournament competed for by local-based players, is due January 8-31 2023 in Algeria.
Uganda Cranes defeated Tanzania 4-0 on aggregate to seal a CHAN finals ticket for a sixth straight time.
Goals from Moses Waiswa, Rogers Mato and Richard Basangwa saw Cranes get the job done at the fully packed St. Mary’s stadium in Kitende, while Travis Mutyaba’s beauty had set the tone in Dar Es Salaam.
But Micho will be well aware that the Cranes have never progressed past the groups in all their five appearances.
DR Congo who won the tournament in 2009 and 2016 will as well be playing in their sixth tournament.
Ivory Coast will be in their fifth and their best placement was finishing third in 2016 Rwanda tourney.
Senegal beat Liberia and Guinea to qualify this year, eliminating the latter via shootouts to return to CHAN for the first time since 2011.
2011 was their second appearance having made their debut in 2009 when they went on to finish fourth.
But with the return of a couple of stars like Lumala Abdu, Allan Okello and Derrick Nsibambi, there is hope that Cranes can finally break the jinx.
