*Preview: Express Seek Perfect Start at Bombo

Express will hoping for a good start into the season when they face hosts UPDF on Saturday at Bombo.

But Bombo has not been a good hunting ground for the Red Eagles.

In the last five meetings at Bombo, Express have only won once and lost the other four.

The last time Express defeated UPDF in Bombo was a 2-1 victory in 2016.

In the last season at Bombo, a Musa Mudde second half penalty was enough to give the Army side a 1-0 win.

Express made a number of additions to replace a bunch of experienced players who exited the team at the end of the season.

Among notable exits include Eric Kambale, Murushid Juuko, Enock Walusimbi and a couple of others who joined Wasswa Bbosa at Gaddafi.

While Allan Kayiwa, Anwar Ntege and Derrick Ngoobi lead the new additions.

The game comes just two days after the club unveiled an ew sponsor in BetSure in a deal worth Sh1.5bn.

Speaking ahead of the game, Express Head Coach James Odoch says his side is ready for the task at hand having had a successful training.

“Training was very good and the boys have been responding well and I think we won’t find much problem in tomorrow’s game,” said Odoch.

“Because we have finalised everything and I think they have understood what I have been training them.”

Odoch is aware of their poor record away to UPDF but he’s confident that his regulated side will put an end to that.

“Actually we want to go there and break that record because we have taken awhile without winning against UPDF away.

“But this is a different team, different coach, different mentality and different approach so I think even the players are aware that being our first game away they want to go and prove themselves so that they can win tomorrow’s game.

“What I can say to the fans, let them turn up in big numbers because these are new players who have different mentalities and different approach, I think they are going to make them happy.”

For UPDF, they will hope to get off their season on a good note and they will bank on their home record against the visitors.

The Army side were very active in the market but beefed their squad with mostly young players.

  • Last season, UPDF played out a 1-1 draw away to Onduparaka in their opening match while Express lost 2-0 at home to Arua Hill in their respective opener.
  • The two faced off in the second match last season and the hosts UPDF were 1-0 winners on the day.
  • The Army side finished 10th last season with 37 points.
  • Express settled for 6th last season with 46 points.
