The Summary: Uganda Premier League defending champions Vipers open the league season with a home game against Bright Stars at Kitende.

Vipers Seek To Set Pace

No Caesar Manzoki (last season’s top scorer), former Captain Halid Lwaliwa, Aziz Kayondo and Paul Willa, but Vipers are still strong favourites to run away with the league.

They have done good business in terms of acquisitions, with Lumala headlining the new additions.

The two full backs of Isa Mubiru and Ashraf Mandela, and centre back Murushid Juuko not to mention Congolese goalkeeper Alfred Macumu Mudekereza leave Vipers with a water tight defence.

Their biggest worry will be if Yunus Ssentamu carried his last season’s scoring boots into this new season, else, the other teams will be playing catch-up.

They start with a side they have beaten on almost all occasions, and two seasons back, they beat them 3-1 in an opener at Wankulukuku even with a red card.

Unlike their opponent, Vipers have played two Competitive games (Bangui home and away).

They beat Bright Stars 4-0 recently at Kitende with Yunus Ssentamu and Ibrahim Orit scoring a brace each.

Vipers will be facing Bright Stars but with their eyes and minds on the CAF Champions League second preliminary round first leg at home against TP Mazembe in a week-time.

They ended the season on a 19-game unbeaten run and will be hoping to start from where they stopped.

Vipers have a lot of quality in their depth to an extent that players like Cromwell Rwothomio, Dissan Galiwango, Ibrahim Orit, Abubakar Lawal and Hilary Mukundane may settle for places on the bench, not to mention their first choice goalkeeper last season Fabien Mutombora.

A win to get off the mark on Friday will set the tone for what promises to be another fruitful season at Kitende.

Asaph Mwebaze on the Wheel

Asaph Mwebaze was in July appointed as the new coach of Bright Stars on a three-year contract, then replacing Paul Kiwanuka.

On Friday, he will be making a return to the touchline since departing his job as head coach of Nyamityobora in 2019.

During that dry spell, he went to the United States before returning to form Astros Soccer Academy that trains at Legends every Saturday.

His credentials have never been in doubt given his 13-year fruitful spell at Maroons but struggled to make ends meet at Nyamityobora and Onduparaka.

“I got attracted to Bright Stars because they were building a team with Youths and I am so passionate with Young players so it’s the project that attracted me,” Coach Mwebaze told The-SportsNation.

“This club has a certain outlook; it’s based in Kawempe and has some good following among the locals there.”

“My target here is to build what other people have achieved here over a certain period of time. This team has been in the league for the last nine years and I want to maintain that status and as well push for upper places.

“I also want to improve the philosophy to see that they play in the way that is pleasant to the eye and also attract fans to come and watch.”

Starting away to the home of the defending champions, is not a fixture anyone can fancy especially for a new coach like Mwebaze.

But whatever the result, Mwebaze will need time and room to see that his philosophy is well grasped by this new looking team.

They lost 12 players including major pieces like Marvin Youngman who they will be facing on Friday at Vipers, goalkeeper Simon Tamale, Andrew Kaggwa, Joseph Janjali and Jungu Methodius among others.

Noordin Bunjo, Amis Muwonge and Sam Ssenyonjo are the major additions.

They have had a good preseason and managed to play a couple of friendlies including falling 4-0 to Vipers and 1-0 to KCCA.

Beating Vipers on Friday, a team they have never beaten before, is a big ask, but an upset in form of a draw can be within their reach.
