*Kampala Queens 5-0 Asubo- Gafford Ladies
*Olila HS WFC 1-0 Lady Doves
Uganda Martyrs beat Rines 2-0 at Lubaga to get their 2022/23 FUFA Women Super League season off to a good start.
Kevin Nakacwa and Brenda Munyana’s first half goals were
enough seal victory for the hosts.
There was a moment of bother for the hosts when Rines were awarded a penalty but Eva Nagayi fluffed her effort in the 53rd minute.
And Rines who survived relegation on last day of last season, left Lubaga with nothing and with a lot to worry about after their new signing and goalkeeper Joan Namusi was stretched off and rushed to hospital following her terrible collision with the hosts’ Catherine Nagadya.
It’s a perfect start for the Lubaga-based side who started life without almost half their starting eleven that featured last season and a new coach as well.
It was entirely a one-sided affair and the scoreline could have read 5-0 or more.
Uganda Martyrs could have at least counted two goals before their opener which came in the 15th minute, but they proved too wasteful.
However, Uganda Martyrs could only be delayed but not denied, as they scored twice before halftime.
In the 15th minute, Nakachwa converted a penalty to hand hosts the deserved lead after she was fouled by Shakira Nulule in the forbidden area.
With five minutes to the break, Nakachwa then set Munyana who doubled the hosts’ lead.
And they could have got the third just before halftime but Munyana sent her chip inches over the bar.
Rines’ only clear chance and probably the only shot on target came in the 53rd minute when they were awarded a penalty but Nagayi’s kick was superbly saved by Shadia Kaidu.
Maureen Nankinga who had won Rines a penalty was substituted off limping before the situation turning uglier when their goalkeeper was rushed to hospital after collision with Nagadya.
Uganda Martyrs had more clear chances to extend their lead but Sumaya Nalumu missed a simple tap in off Nakachwa’s cross.
And Rines’ substitute goalkeeper Nansamba pulled off a good save to deny Nakachwa’s well taken free-kick near the box to reduce on damages.
Uganda Martyrs will next Sunday visit newbies Asubo Gafford Ladies while Rines host UCU Lady Cardinals next Saturday.
