•Uganda Vs Uruguay
Uganda’s men sevens team will seek to get off the mark when they face Uruguay in the 2022 World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in Santiago, Chile.
The World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, returning after a year absence due to COVID, is a promotion pathway to HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
The tournament comes off the back of the team’s 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham where they finished 10th.
Uganda face Uruguay in their opener on Friday, with Germany and Lithuania the other teams in Pool C.
Uganda Sevens coach Tolbert Onyango said of the tournament, as quoted by World Rugby:
“It would create a pathway for the young players who are picking up the sport.
“[It would] show them that even if you pick up the sport locally you can go and play internationally and be recognised for your efforts.”
Uganda beat Uruguay 38-28 at AT&T park in San Francisco at the 2018 World Cup in their last meeting.
They will be banking on the recent Commonwealth experience to come out of Pool C.
In Birmingham, despite falling to Kenya in their opener, Uganda showcased their ability with a 12-12 draw against giants Australia before beating Jamaica in the last group game.
And they eased past Sir Lanka and Tonga in the classification games before falling to England 31-07 in the fight for ninth place.
After the Commonwealth Games, Uganda held some training sessions in Birmingham before flying out to Chile.
And besides Desire Ayera who picked up an injury, it’s the same squad that featured for Uganda in Commonwealth.
