Uganda’s middle distance runner Halimah Nakaayi has progressed to the 800m final at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Nakaayi finished second in the first heat in a time of 1:59.35 just behind Kenya’s Mary Moraa (1:59.22).
The Women’s 800m final is due Saturday with Natoya Goule (Jamaica), Laura Muir (Scotland), Keely Hodgkinson (England) and Catriona Bisset (Australia) the other finalists.
Jamaica’s Goule won bronze in 2018 Gold Coast and will be hoping to return to the podium.
The other two medalists in 2018 – Caster Semenya and Margaret Wambui have since been barred from competing in middle distances due to higher testosterone levels.
In 2018, Nakaayi failed to go past the 800m heats and she had suffered similar fate during the 400m heats back in 2014 games in Gold Coast.
She had her best performance at the 2019 World Championships when she clinched gold at the 800m in Doha.
She failed to go past the semis in the 2021 Olympics and 2022 World Championships.
