Uganda’s middle distance runner Halimah Nakaayi will be in 800m heats on Friday morning at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon (US).

Nakaayi stunned a classy field in 2019 at Doha to win the 800m title in a time of 1:58.04, then beating United States duo of Raevyn Rogers and Ajee Wilson.

A lot has changed since then, the Girls have runner faster and there are a couple of new faces on the scene.

Athing Mu is the Olympic 800m champion after beating Briton Keely Hodgkinson to gold in Tokyo.

Nakaayi ran 1:58.68 last month but finished fourth at the Bislett Games in Oslo.

Her Personal Best stands at 1:58.03, which is a National Record, set last year at Herculis in Monaco.

She is in heat three alongside Athing Mu and Cuban Rose Mary Almanza, with the two having quicker PBs.

The first three of each heat and the next six fastest across the six heats qualify to the semis.

A couple of athletes have dipped under 1:59, including Kenya’s Mary Moraa, Jemma Reekie (Great Britain) and Jamaica’s Natoya Goule among others.

Such is the talent that has made Nakaayi an outside favourite to defend a title she won three years ago. And work is cut out for her after failing to make the final in Tokyo.
