World Championships: Chesang Breaks 10,000m National Record

Stella Chesang ran a 31:01.04 time to set a new National Record for Uganda in the Women’s 10,000m during the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

Chesang missed out on the podium places after finishing a distant 14th but she will settle for a NR at least.

Chesang who won gold in the 10,000m at the 2018 Commonwealth games held in Gold Coast, erases a previous record held by Sarah Chelangat.

Chelangat, on October 10 2020, set 31:01.04 during the FBK After Summer Competitions in Hengelo, Netherlands.

Mercyline Chelangat finished 16th on Saturday at the Hayward Field, in the same event where Chesang came 14th.

World Record holder Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia won the Women’s 10,000m gold in a time of 30:09.94.

Hassan Siffan’s late kick down the stretch was in vain as Kenyan duo of Hellen Obiri and Margaret Kipkemboi came second and third in that order.

Earlier, Peruth Chemutai finished fifth in heat two of the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase to qualify to the final as one of the next fastest six.
