Gomba finally got off the mark in the ongoing 2022 Masaza Cup after a deserved 2-0 win over Kooki in a Bulange Group match on Sunday at Kabulasoke playground.
Tonny Kiberu scored just after the half-hour mark when he bundled in from close range after Kooki goalkeeper Ibra Lubega had spilled an initial effort from Blancher Mulamba.
Then Abasi Kyeyune strolled through Kooki defence to the byline before his cut-back found Kenneth Kimera inside the area who slotted in to double the advantage deep in the second half to ignite wild celebrations.
But Gomba Lions finished the match a man down after defender Edward Tala received matching orders after his second yellow card.
It’s the first win for Gomba in the going 2022 Masaza Cup after falling to Buwekula in Kasenyi in their opener.
“It’s good we finally found our winning touch,” said Gomba Lions coach Emuron Recoba.
“We are a winning team and we hope to get our sixth title this year. We started poorly but we are now back to winning ways.”
Recoba said that his team is not where he wants them to be at the moment due to a couple of missing players including Faisal Wabyoona who just joined KCCA FC.
Gomba captain Angelo Ssempijja commended the team management and fans for the support and promised not to drop more points in the next games.
The win sends Gomba third on the log with three points, just behind Buwekula and Butambala in the Bulange group.
They will return to action against Butambala in Kibibi on July 16.
