Rugby Cranes 7s Squad To Birmingham Named

Uganda Rugby Cranes 7s coach Tolbert Onyango has named the final squad to represent the country at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Rugby 7s at the 2022 Commonwealth Games is scheduled to be held at the Coventry Stadium from 29 to 31 July 2022.

The Rugby Cranes qualified to Commonwealth after reaching the semifinals of the 2022 Rugby Africa 7s in Kampala, which they eventually won to also book a 2022 Rugby 7s World Cup ticket to South Africa.

Going into that tournament at Kyadondo, the Cranes needed to finish among the top two Commonwealth nations outside Kenya to reach Birmingham – The Shujaa had already qualified via rankings.

Coach Onyango has named a final squad of 14, including Buffaloes’ Levis Ocen who is on standby.

Only Kelvin Balagadde, of the team that won the 2022 Rugby Africa 7s Cup, has been left out.

Phillip Wokorach who is with the Rugby Cranes 15s team in France will join the team later on, while his name-sake Michael Wokorach is the captain and will be assisted by Ian Munyani.

Did you know – Uganda will be playing at Commonwealth games for the fifth straight time after previous appearances in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018.
