Crested Cranes duo of Fazilah Ikwaput and Fauziah Najjemba have been nominated for the continent’s prestigious awards.
Ikwaput has been listed on the preliminary list for CAF African Women Footballer of the year category.
Fauziah is nominated in the CAF Young Player of the Year.
The duo are part of Uganda’s Crested Cranes currently taking part in the Women AFCON in Morocco.
The CAF Awards 2022 will be held on 21 July 2022 in Rabat, Morocco.
It’s a tall order for any of the two to take the award, but a nomination a lone is a big recognition for them and Women Football in Uganda that is on a meteoric rise.
Ikwaput is in a classy field that has 29 players and she is the first Ugandan female footballer to earn this recognition since the awards were started in 2001.
The list has six South African players and four Nigerian players including Barcelona’s Asisat Oshoala who has taken this gong a joint record four times.
Ikwaput’s recognition is deserved after helping Lady Doves win the FUFA Women Super League in 2020/21 season, finishing as a top scorer and MVP, to qualify for the CAF Women Champions League Zonal Qualifiers.
She was a joint top scorer last season in the league with 16, and also vital as Uganda won their maiden CECAFA Women Championship at Njeru where she bagged six goals.
Fauziah, nominated for Young Player gong, finished as top scorer with 12 goals at the 2022 CECAFA U20 Women Championship at Njeru.
